Free and open to everyone young and old! Our monthly programs are held on the 4th Monday of each month in Phelps. Guests from around upstate NY speak on a variety of topics! Special Programs and activities are held throughout year. Snacks are provided by the PCHS refreshment committee. 2011 EXHIBITS
On The First Floor (year round) Visit the First floor of the two-story outhouse. And the Oak Room, Kitchen, Office /Giftshop as well as the many other rooms with rotating exhibits. Home to the Phelps Community Hsitorical Society Offices. At The Howe House, 66 Main Street, Wed-Sat 10 AM-4 PM.
- General Store & Old Time Businesses (thru June 2011) From old fashioned advertising give aways to signs, stories and photos – enjoy visiting the businesses of Phelps past. In the East Room at The Howe House, 66 Main Street, Wed-Fri 10 AM-4 PM.
- Civil War 150th Years Ago (April thru December 2011) 150 years ago in April, 1861, Fort Sumpter was fired upon and so began one of the most relentless periods in our country’s history – aspects of which are still felt today. In the Dining Room at The Howe House, 66 Main Street, Wed-Fri 10 AM-4 PM.
- History of Phelps Fire Departments (July thru December 2011) From the neighborhood fire station to the consolidated halls, from parades to fund raisers -come celebrate the dedication of our men and women who are the best of our community. In the East Room at The Howe House, 66 Main Street, Wed-Fri 10 AM-4 PM.
- On the Second Floor (Year Round) Our second floor has a series of former bedrooms which exhibit early pioneer household tools, Sauerkraut history, sports and tools as well as a children’s room and the POW/MIA Table to our Veterans and a Fireman’s room. Country Lawyer’s Office (June-August 2011) Visit the offices of The Country Lawyer – the book written by Bellamy Partridge made Phelps and the small town lawyer practice a household name. Purchased in an auction for $88 in the 1840s; this ca. 1835 building was actually the offices for several “Country Lawyers” from 1840s to 1999. It was given to PCHS in 2005 and restored in 2008.
